Curitiba is currently the most motorized city of the country.
A research from Paraná Pesquisas shows that 82% of Curitiba drivers use their cars every single day.
"The fact that Curitiba reached One Million cars destroys two symbols of the city", comments Fábio Duarte, Professor of the Master's Degree Program in Urban Management at the PUC-PR. "The first is the Ecological Capital. The second is the efficient public transport", he affirms.

According to a graphic published by the Curitiba Institute of Urban Research and Planning ( IPPUC) in 2003, Curitiba has the second highest rate of death by traffic accidents among all brazilian capitals. The graphic above shows the number of deaths for each 100,000 inhabitants.

But, with the purpose of making drivers and pedestrians aware of the risks caused by the recklessness in the streets, public transit departments all over the country try to evaluate the social damage caused by the accidents within the urban area. And the figures are frightening: from january to september this year only, Curitiba spent over R$ 200 millions (approximately US$ 100 million) with traffic accidents and 20,309 accidents were reported, according to the Police Department (BPTran)...
