O Art Center College of Design de Los Angeles – conhecido como a “Harvard” do design de tranportes – recentemente patrocinou o simpósio “Expanding the Vision of Sustainable Mobility“, onde Timothy Papandreou defendeu a idéia de que está mais do que na hora das cidades favorecerem as pessoas, e não os carros. A Wired escreveu sobre o assunto, que pode ser acessado através deste link.

Outro Trânsito é Possível!

Você escutou os sapos ao longo das ruas de Belém enquanto estava esperando o trânsito melhorar (de modo que você pudesse ir para a UFPA ou a UFRA)? Você poderia se virar e falar com as pessoas atrás de você? É uma pena que a mesma multidão de 100.000 pessoas, que busca criar um outro mundo, continua dependente da mesma matriz tecnológica de transportes que está destruindo o planeta. Alguns de nós temos experimentado um tipo diferente de trânsito e queremos que você saiba que está sendo um grande avanço! Nós escutamos os sapos e falamos com estranhos, e experimentamos a cidade e o trânsito de uma forma totalmente nova.

Existiram alguns espasmos de esperança no Fórum Social Mundial de Belém. No campus da UFRA um sistema de bicitaxi ou ciclotaxi foi introduzido, sugerindo uma alternativa melhor. As possibilidades, no entanto, foram vivenciadas numa celebração desafiadora que ocorreu sexta-feira, 30 janeiro, na primeiríssima bicicletada (ou massa crítica) da Amazônia. Cem ciclistas ocuparam as ruas, não se importando com a chuva constante. Rodaram por toda a parte de Belém, invadiram um posto de gasolina, subverteram uma regra estúpida sobre a não entrada de bicicletas num parque público, trocaram saudações e boas vibrações com os cidadãos de Belém em toda parte, e também com delegados do FSM em hotéis luxuosos. “Mais adrenalina, menos gasolina!” e “Menos carros, mais bicicletas” ecoaram através das ruas, alterando para sempre o imaginário de muitíssimas pessoas, as quais agora ao menos puderam ter uma pequena amostra de que outro mundo no trânsito não somente é possível como já existe, aqui.

O FSM deveria banir os carros dos seus futuros locais e no lugar, deveria implementar uma frota de bicicletas para o uso pelos delegados (em conjunto com um sistema rápido e eficiente de transportes elétricos para aqueles que não querem ou não podem pedalar). Outros mundos SÃO possíveis, no entanto eles JÁ ESTAO AQUI se nós tivermos a visão e a vontade de começar a mudar agora. Não está na hora de pararmos imediatamente de utilizar carros privados e motores a gasolina, e não postergar essa atitude esperando alguma incerta revolução chegar? O planeta depende disso e os ciclistas a reivindicam!

Besides all activities presented in the first part about Bicycle Month, there was a special planning for the World Carfree Day plus our traditional critical mass at the end of the month.

Carfree Day – September 22th

Our Park(ing) Day began early in the morning in XV de Novembro Street (close to Santos Andrade Square)

At noon it moved to Dr. Faivre Street in front of Progepe where it was going to have a debate with the mayor candidates from Curitiba about sustainable mobility.

Also on the 22th, a few downtown garbage cans gained life.

Although not all candidates participate of the debate, it was good to hear people discussing non-motorized transportation in such serious ways. At the end, the candidate signed a “Commitment letter”.

After the debate, around 5pm we moved once again to Amintas de Barros Street, a familiar place for us. It’s the meeting point for the monthly critical mass. Today, it would have a special one. More than 300 cyclists swept the crowded streets of downtown Curitiba at rush hour. The ride began at 6:45pm and lasted one hour and a half. Avenues five-lanes wide were completely taken by bicycles. It has never been so calm to cross these streets at rush hour. The feeling of freedom and security was such that six or seven cyclists took off their clothes for a brief moment to protest.

Critical Mass – September 27th

At the end of the month everybody was tired but extremely happy with the results of the Bicycle Month journey. Sure, we didn’t reach a substantial part of the city, but we raised a lot of questions, we brought the media and we catched the attention of a great number of people.

But we still had our traditional ride. The surprise of the day was the official opening of the Oscar Niemeyer Museum Bikepark. See a detailed report in portuguese and lots of pictures at the September-08 Critical Mass post.

Única ciclofaixa de Curitiba

We had a lot of good ideas for WCFD in Curitiba. However, it was impossble to promote a huge evento without support from municipalities. We would need authorization for closing streets, more buses available, a team to coordinate cultural activities, hire artists, set up food courts and shops, and produce material to broadcast and raise awareness throughout the city.

Unfortunately, we noticed soon enough that the government didn’ want to help at all, just like the previous years. So, we decided to creat a lot of small events instead of a big one.

After exposing the idea for groups and individuals that are in someway linked with the urban mobility issue in Curitiba, the basic principle to promote an event was quite simples: “Whoever came up with an idea should be responsible to execute it.”

As we had a lot of them, it was created a blog to schedule all the activities, making it easier to broadcast and coordinate each of them. Everyone involved spreaded the word to his local community. At the end of August we had almost everything arranged and there were two basic kinds of activities: weekly and unique
